The face-lifted Jeep Compass was introduced last year with the launch of the Limited and S-Limited variants (and the limited edition Launch Edition, which was just a special edition). The Trailhawk exits the range as the flagship model and, like those other models, gets new LED headlights and a larger grille for a slightly fresher face. Still, more noticeably, it’s received an interior overhaul.
Elsewhere, the Trailhawk gets its active safety technology that now complements the other options as standard, and it gets a 2.0-liter turbo diesel. In contrast, the others get a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine. Plus, that unique all-wheel-drive system makes the Trailhawk a trail-ready Jeep and surprisingly good for a small SUV.
A key feature of the 2022 Jeep Compass Trailhawk is its off-road ability. Compared to the Limited and Limited-S, the Trailhawk adds an ultra-low gear ratio and lock-up 4WD to help you move slowly through difficult terrain, making it an alternative to the Land Rover Discovery Sport (which is a fair bit more expensive). Jeep’s Active Drive Low system gives the Compass a “creep ratio” to negotiate steep inclines. At the same time, its intelligent four-wheel drive can direct all of the engine’s power to just one wheel when needed. Selec-Terrain provides Snow, Sand, Mud, Rock, and Auto driving modes, with a Rock setting exclusive to the Trailhawk. A higher suspension, underbody shielding, new bumpers, and a red tow hook testify to its off-road ability. For the 2022 model year, the Compass will receive a mid-cycle refresh, part of which is a slightly updated interior. The infotainment touchscreen is the outstanding feature of the dash. Still, this top-of-the-line trim also has a fully digital display. Physical controls remain, however, for climate and the most frequently used driver aids. But the center console also has a lot of glossy plastic that attracts dust, scratches, and fingerprints.
Since this is the Trailhawk Elite’s highest trim level, it has every feature offered by the Jeep Compass. Leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, heated seats, a power door, an all-around camera, etc.
The new Uconnect 5 infotainment system is one of the most significant advancements in terms of technology. It’s displayed on a 10.1-inch touchscreen that’s easy to reach for both tall and short drivers. Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay are compatible with the Uconnect 5 infotainment system. The system also has a certain degree of customization. The home screen of this model can be customized to display frequently used widgets, and the favorites tab can be dragged from top to bottom. Overall, the 2022 Jeep Compass Trailhawk has no issues with the system regarding ease of use or phone connectivity.
The Jeep Compass engine is a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine that produces 177 hp. and 172 lb-ft of torque (132 kW and 233 Nm). Those are generally the same power figures as the competition. Still, the way this engine delivers power makes it feel slightly underpowered. The peak power is not reached until the engine revives at 6,400 rpm and the peak torque at 3,900 rpm. So it takes a few engine revs to climb a steep hill or hit the highway. It also has a reasonably sensitive gas pedal. If a feather falls on it, it will cause the car to lunge forward, so starting from a stop can be a little awkward if you have a heavier leg.
