Dodge entered the compact crossover conversation with the 2023 Hornet. This time, Dodge decided on a standard base with the Alfa Romeo Tonale—A four-cylinder engine with a capacity of 268 hp—instead of redesigning the Jeep Compass, as it did with the uncommon Caliber, its last effort at a small SUV.
Turbocharged, all-wheel drive, and a 9-speed automatic is standard, but a 288-horsepower R/T hybrid model with more than 32 miles of electric range is due for a 2024 model year. The Hornet offers the most advanced equipment in the Dodge lineup, with standard features that include Uconnect 5 infotainment software, a digital gauge display, and automated emergency braking with pedestrian and bicyclist detection.
For the 2023 model year, Dodge will only offer the Hornet in GT form, but in base and GT Plus trim. A large 10.3-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, and dual-zone automatic climate control are just a few of the attractive standard features that come with the base GT. If you reside in the Sun Belt, you can forego the Cold Weather Group package and save some cash. This package includes heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a remote start.

The Hornet’s cabin is just as spacious as the Tonale’s, meaning it’s roomy for front-seat riders but cramped for those in the back. Interior styling is also similar to the Tonale, with the main controls and infotainment system angled slightly towards the driver and the automatic transmission’s tall shifter positioned on the center console. The Dodge Hornet also uses the same steering wheel as the Alfa Romeo but with the Dodge logo in the center, which has an integrated ignition switch under the left spoke. Black upholstery with red stitching is standard; however, the GT Plus trim has leather; those ordered with the optional Track package get faux suede. A red leather interior option is also available.
All models come with a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital display. The software interface of the 2023 Dodge Hornet is the latest Uconnect 5 system used on other Stellantis models, such as the Ram 1500 pickup and the Chrysler Pacifica minivan. Wireless Android, as well as Auto Apple CarPlay, are standard features, as is the connectivity of Amazon Alexa. Upgrading to the GT Plus replaces the 14-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo with a standard system. It adds a bar for wireless smartphone charging.
Hornet GT models are powered by a 268-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. During our initial test drive, the Hornet GT was quite peppy. This transmission is enough to motivate the Hornet to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. The R/T plug-in hybrid model features slightly more power and an EV mode that should make it quicker, but buyers will have to wait until the 2024 model year to take one home.
