The Wrangler 4xe is the first electrified open-air SUV that combines all the capabilities that made the Wrangler its name with an advanced hybrid powertrain. The Wrangler has many options that allow you to customize it to suit any use, and the 4xe is no different. You can drive it fully open with a soft top and an available Mopar® Door-Off Mirror Kit that lets you remove the doors while keeping the side mirrors. You can choose a full hardtop or split the difference with a Sunrider® hardtop. And suppose a good stereo is a priority. In that case, the Alpine® Premium Audio system is available, featuring an overhead sound bar, an all-weather subwoofer, and a 552-watt amplifier. As an exclusive option for the 4xe, Jeep also offers a Level II4 charger that can fully charge your 4xe in just two hours, six times faster than a Level I charger.

By default, the Wrangler 4xe makes its own decisions about the mix of gas and electricity. The electric car only locks the SUV on battery power, or at least as long as you have a charge. Finally, E-Save allows you to drive on gasoline only, leaving the battery charge for later.
Meanwhile, a somewhat cryptic button on the center console toggles between normal and high regeneration. Off and it behaves like a normal SUV on gas. In active mode, you get much more regenerative braking when you take off the gas pedal. The good news is that it retains its settings even if you turn the Jeep off and on again; the downside is that you can’t stop the Wrangler 4xe with regeneration alone, so don’t expect one-pedal driving.
There is a regular shifter for the standard eight-speed automatic and a second shifter to shift between 2H, 4H Auto, 4H Part-Time, N, and 4L modes. You’ll likely stick with 4H Auto in normal snow conditions, which lets the Wrangler decide when to engage all-wheel drive based on road conditions. Otherwise, longtime Wrangler enthusiasts — or truck drivers in general — will only find a little to scare them about the 4xe’s controls.
Rubicon trims received a glossy red panel of additional controls in the vertical center console to control the front and rear differential locks and a lamp. Four additional buttons can be connected to accessories such as light bars.
In fact, except for the blue stitching that matches the exterior trim, you’d be forgiven for forgetting you’re in a hybrid. The Jeep’s analog gauges are interspersed with a color display that shows battery and fuel status, range, and drive mode. The center stack has a decent-sized 8.4-inch touchscreen that runs Uconnect 5 and a set of large tactile buttons and climate control knobs below.
The Jeep’s infotainment user interface feels cluttered compared to the more streamlined interfaces of its competitors. Still, it’s fairly easy to navigate once you get the hang of it. You get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support with USB-A and USB-C ports in multiple places.
With 470 lb-ft of torque and 375 hp, the Wrangler 4xe shows off the benefits of a plug-in hybrid. As you’d expect from a Wrangler, the 4xe is a formidable off-road machine. But thanks to the low-end torque from the electric motor, things like crawling over rocks are even easier than in a regular Wrangler. The 4xe is also the world’s first PHEV with front and rear locking differentials, allowing you to take advantage of the 4xe’s off-road capabilities like any Wrangler. The 4xe has three driving modes for the hybrid system: Hybrid, Electric, and eSave. ESave is used to conserve the electricity stored in the batteries when you need it most. The Electric uses only electric power to take you through low-noise or low-emission areas or for a quiet ride off-road. Hybrid, the default mode, is the best of both worlds. This includes using the full power of the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and the electric motors.
